Is your air conditioner environmentally friendly? If it uses R-22, the refrigerant used in most home comfort systems, it isn't. Unfortunately, while you're cooling off, your air conditioner is depleting the earth's ozone layer. The good news is that by the year 2004, R-22 will essentially be phased out and replaced by Puron. Unlike R-22, Puron has received the highest safety rating from the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers. It has been used in homes successfully since 1996 and provides efficient cooling without harming the ozone layer. What does this mean for you? If you indeed have a system that utilizes R-22, your cost of servicing or replacing products will rise dramatically as supplies diminish. Not only will you be minimizing the damage to the earth, you'll also be minimizing the damage done to your wallet from having to maintain or replace an R-22 based air conditioner. h2. In Selecting A New Air Conditioner... Get the Facts When purchasing a new Air Conditioner there are many things to be considered. The most important factors are energy efficiency, quietness, and quality. BETTER Model 591B, The Quantum Plus™ Model with Puron 11 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) This model has Puron, the environmentally-friendly refrigerant. Puron offers higher levels of efficiency and saves you from the costs associated with servicing products with Freon-22. This model also has the exclusive Aeroquiet System.  Improvements were made to the cabinet, fan system and top resulting in better air flow, lower noise and better efficiency. The scroll compressor is equipped with a more powerful motor and is constructed heavier than most making it reliable in operation. Bryant's Duraguard Coil Guard provides heavy-duty coil protection, preventing the unit from becoming damaged by rocks or other debris. Lastly, this model is equipped with high and low pressure switches which aid in protecting the compressor leading to greater reliability. BEST Model 187A The Two-Speed Puron Plus™ 16.5 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio)_ The Two-Speed Puron Plus is equipped with two speeds, one for standard, everyday conditions, and a second, more powerful system for extra-hot days. It operates on low speed up to 80% of the time, which allows the system to circulate cool air throughout your home for longer periods of time, creating even, consistent temperature in every  room. If the temperature rises, this model automatically shifts to high speed. The Two-Speed Puron Plus is not only excellent at maintaining a constant temperature, it also maintains a comfortable level of humidity. This two-speed operation is facilitated by an electronic control board. A puron refrigerant is used to maximize heat transfer and provide environmentally sound performance. Puron, unlike R-22, provides cooling without depleting the earth's ozone layer. This model is equipped with the Aeroquiet System,™ designed to move air more easily and less noisily.
